Hello and welcome to Chickonwheelz!
Where my goal is to raise awareness of the trials and tribulations for those who have both physical and invisible disabilities. I want to show the public and media that people are more than just their diagnosis. Ultimately, I want to change the perception that people with disabilities aren’t helpless and neither an inspiration but just normal human beings.
I am, of course, Rachel (or Raimie to friends and family) I am in my twenties and live in South Wales, UK. I have Cerebral Palsy and ME syndrome and have been inspired once again to write a blog about living with a disability. (This will be my fourth attempt and have gone under many aliases over the years including; Uniquelyunable, Authorrachelm and Wheelzandheelz so, if you’re thinking that you’ve seen some content before then don’t panic I haven’t stolen it from anywhere!)
I was born at 27 weeks at the Princess of Wales hospital in March 1998 and my parents were told that I wasn’t going to live. But I did. Then at two years old, I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, I was told that I wouldn’t have much of a life and that I wouldn’t speak, sit up etc. But I did. So since then, I’ve been defying doctors ever since.
Now that I don’t use a frame anymore and am constantly sitting down I have developed scoliosis and an accident involving a tail lift led me to break two discs and developing a dependency on painkillers. I am also a massive advocate for speaking up about mental health. I have also developed arthritis in my fasset joints and it’s degenerative.
Aside from the disability side of things, I am your normal twenty-something who loves nothing more than a good book, listening to Demi Lovato and watching Zac Efron movies. I am also partial to a Pimms or the odd vodka. I love the theatre and would one day love to do some acting (particularly playing Sandy in Grease or Tracy in Hairspray!)
If you’ve read this far then you may as well join me on the rest of the ride!
