Adopted by her controlling foster mother at the age of eight, twenty-year-old Tara has seen little of the outside world. Lonely, punished for the slightest offense, her only distraction comes from watching the Feely family’s online videos. They’re an affectionate vlogging quintet and an internet sensation. Most important, they are Tara’s mental refuge. Then the opportunity arises for them to be something more. When Tara accepts an internship with the close-knit clan, they’re her escape.
Daring to run away, and defying Mother’s rules, Tara is welcomed into the loving fold. But the more Tara gets to know them, the more she realizes that not everything is as it seems. As secrets slowly surface, the image of the perfect family begins to crack. For Tara, it’s another trap.
To claim a life of her own, she’ll need a new escape plan. Because as the show’s popularity explodes, reaching even more fascinated viewers, Tara can’t shake the feeling that Mother is among their ranks. She’s watching. She’s waiting. She’ll never let her go.
My verdict: A spine chilling thriller where a YouTube fan being held captive by ‘Mother’ Beaten, Starved, Emotionally abused and forced to sell stolen goods online escapes and takes refuge with her favourite family of Youtubers as their intern.. however things aren’t as picture perfect as they seem online and soon the cracks begin to show.
She starts to believe that she finally has all she’s ever wanted but ‘Mother’ is waiting in the shadows to unveil her cruelest punishment yet. Could the abduction of another girl who was seen being bundled into a van that looks like ‘Mother’s’ be a coincidence? Or is Tara being paranoid or does this unlock the memory of Tara’s life before ‘Mother’ why does she have vague memories of twin siblings and is their a reason why her favourite doll is named Angela and why is their a bracelet with the name Angela hidden in her dolls neck. When she comes close to figuring it all out ‘Mother’ is determined to keep Tara quiet.. but now that another girls life is in danger from ‘Mother’ Tara must fight back and stand up for herself. A fast paced thriller ultimately showing us that you can never really know a person. Fans of Shalini Boland will love this novel about deceptive appearances and how those closest to you can be the ones to hurt you and that Family is the most important thing of all.
