Book Review: One of us is lying by Shalini Boland

Genre: Thriller

Rating: 5/5

Tia is walking home with her children, along the lakeside of their quiet, safe town, when she realises something is wrong with her five-year-old daughter, Rosie. She seems troubled, not at all her usual happy self.

But when Tia finally coaxes Rosie to open up, she wishes she hadn’t. Because her sweet daughter asks a question Tia never thought she’d hear.

‘Why did you kill someone?’

Tia knows how rumours spread around her small town. She just can’t understand who would have shared such a horrible story. Or why.

It can’t have anything to do with what happened. Only her two best friends really remember that…

Tia thought she could trust Fiona and Kelly with her life. They’ve been through so much together. But when she’s sent photos of herself that could tear her whole world apart, she starts to wonder. Someone is determined to punish her. But who? And will her friends stand by her, or will the past destroy all of their lives?

My verdict: A mesmerising thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat as I turned each page, I loved all the curve balls thrown into the mix made it even more exciting. I loved the multiple view points and flashbacks and I have found that even a plot as intricate and complicated is easy to follow and enjoyable due to Bolands ability to convey the narrative almost bluntly without losing out on descriptive detail.

This book not only deals with historical sexual abuse and how often in society the victim is blamed due to the predicament (However less so due to the #Metoo movement) but grief, suicide, domestic abuse and the bombshell that affects family members because of a crime committed. This book is also about friendship and how even the strongest gust of wind cannot put out the flame no matter how much you try. This book will make you question wether you really know someone and how secure you are in yourself. A fast paced thriller looking at how the actions of one individual can effect others. If you enjoyed Big Little Lies and Gone Girl you will love this.
