Book Review: The Best Friend by Shalini Boland

Rating: 5/5

Genre: Thriller

Plot: When Louisa Sullivan takes her little boy to his first playdate at a new friend’s house she doesn’t realise life is about to change for her family. Because she’s about to meet Darcy Lane.

Darcy is a woman who has everything – a dream house, a powerful husband and enviable wealth.

She’s the perfect wife.

The perfect friend.

The perfect liar.

My verdict: I read this all in a day and found myself enthralled by chaos that Darcy brings into Louisa’s life. A fast paced and overall immersive read in which we as readers can’t wait to discover Louisa’s new BFF’s past, trauma, twisted mind and need overall desire to wreck the protagonists life. I loved every minute of this book and found they way that Shalini incorporates the flashback elements and conflicting emotions of each character without the plot becoming too labourious or cumbersome is truly a skill that the author has mastered here. I love the way the author always manages to delve into the human psyche and present both sides of an argument as to why someone may make poor choices and this callous attitude is portrayed by the antagonist gave me goosebumps - overall the author lets the action, consequence, and emotional fallout that follows to drive the plot giving you a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter like a well written television drama but without the far-fetched plot.

I love all of the characters in this book and found at some levels identifying with each of them at some point feeling empathy and sympathy – I almost didn’t know who to trust – Ultimately, that element of wariness and suspicion is what a true thriller should invoke and is done so well here. Another thought provoking thriller about identity a need for love, family and, trusting your gut instinct.
