Me and my disability: Coping with pain with Christmas coming up

Coincidentally my pain has flared up after my bath this morning so, I thought you might need to hear this if you’re going through the same thing right now.

  • It’s not your fault, you cannot feel guilty that you are in pain. You cannot help it.
  • Prevention is better than cure, please take your medication if you need it.
  • Stay warm and dry cold and damp conditions can exacerbate pain.
  • When the pain is bad practice taking deep breaths in and out as if you are gearing up to blow out a candle.
  • Ask someone to give you a massage with some soothing essential oils
  • Try some gentle physiotherapy
  • For burning pain try a cold compress or ice
  • Try vitamins (in case you may be deficient in something but, consult your doctor first
  • Try reflexology to get rid of the toxins built up in your body.
  • Support a healthy immune system by taking a probiotic.
  • Keep hydrated
  • Eat healthy meals
  • Try and rest if you need to – pain can be very draining.
  • Take anti inflammatories/ paracetamol’s every four hours
  • Distract yourself by reading a book or watching a television programme (Netflix has a good selection of Christmas movies and TV programmes – for some recommendations on what to watch, check out my entertainment and similarly my reading section)
  • If you still haven’t bought your Christmas presents you could always ask a friend or neighbor to go shopping armed with a list of exactly what to get and a budget or, there is still a week to have your shopping delivered via Amazon and other online retailers.
  • If you’re just feeling stressed out and worn out with it all I highly recommend writing a dump list – where you list all your worries on one bit of paper and prioritise what needs sorting first.
